 About the Society

The West African College of Surgeons is dedicated to the promotion, organization and conduct of postgraduate education, training and certification in Surgery, and related disciplines and specialties in West Africa through the composition of Faculties. In this regard, Surgery shall be deemed to include Anaesthesiology, Dental Surgery, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and any other related Sub-specialties as the College may determine from time to time. It seeks to foster and coordinate education and research in Surgery and related disciplines. The College cooperates with appropriate national and international bodies worldwide whose aims and objectives are likely to promote, assist, develop and advance the interests of the College in the pursuit of its own objectives. The College is engaged in the preparation and publication of journals, pamphlets and memoranda, singly or in collaboration with other bodies or organizations as may be considered useful in support of its objectives. It pursues the conduct, participation in and appointment of representatives or delegates to meetings, symposia and conferences of other bodies in medical and related disciplines, and sets up appropriate committees for the consideration of the objectives of the College.

  About the Journal

The Journal of The West African College of Surgeons (JWACS) is a publication of the West African College of Surgeons and is indexed in PubMed. The journal serves as an international portal for the publication of scholarly research works with relevance to the management of surgical and allied diseases in West Africa, Africa as well as other parts of the world. It is published four times in a year (March, June, September and December).

This is an open access journal, and articles are distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 License, which allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon the work non-commercially, as long as appropriate credit is given and the new creations are licensed under the identical terms.

Digital Archiving

Wolters Kluwer Medknow provides for long-term digital preservation through two primary partnerships, Portico and CLOCKSS.

Portico is a leading digital preservation service worldwide. The content is preserved as an archival version and is not publically accessible via Portico, but is provided when required under specific conditions, such as discontinuation of the collection or catastrophic failure of the website.

CLOCKSS will enable any library to maintain their own archive of content from Wolters Kluwer Medknow and other publishers, with minimal technical effort and using cheaply available hardware.

Ahead of Print policy

Articles published online under the Ahead of Print model are considered published and can be cited and quoted using the DOI as the reference source. Wolters Kluwer Medknow has a policy that changes will not be made after publication of an article without following accepted procedures for making corrections to the scientific record.

Advertisements

While advertisements are crucial to this journal to be able to keep all content free for everyone, ethical considerations are in place to ensure the integrity of the journal and its content:

  • "Pop-up" and "banner" ads appear on a random, rotating basis. The advertiser has no control or input over the pages where their ads appear.
  • The Editorial Board has full and final approval over the content of all advertisements.
  • Advertisers will never be shown any manuscripts or other content prior to publication.

  Scope of the journal

The Journal of the West African College of Surgeons publishes high quality and relevant manuscripts in the surgical sciences as well as updates on the management of diseases in surgery and allied specialties that would impact positively on the outcome of such diseases in West Africa, Africa as well as other parts of the world.
